Chicago D&D
As a recent Chicago transplant, I spent a lot of time walking around my neighborhood trying to orient myself. I noticed that many of the intersections would make for interesting names for Dungeons and Dragons characters, and started doodling. I posted the end results to Twitter, writing short descriptions for each character.
Cornelia Whipple – Wizard
She took up magic as a hobby after her children left to go adventuring. As Cornelia learned her craft, her husband became the frequent recipient of low-level incantations. She accidentally turned him into a chicken, but says they prefer it this way.
Argyle Winthrop – Ranger
The son of a witch, orphaned by agents of the church, he is the sworn enemy of witch hunters. Argyle spent years studying their methods and craft, and now uses their own tools against them, stalking the pious arbiters of false justice.
Drake Thorndale – Druid
You’re talking too loud, Drake says, you’ll scare the birds. Why not just enjoy the sounds of nature instead of filling them with your own squawking? This is why druids prefer to sleep away the centuries.
Winnemac Winchester – Paladin
I fear not darkness, for I walk in the light I fear not evil, for my cause is just I fear not pain, for my suffering is righteous I fear not death, for I will be born again
Western Grace – Fighter
The unnamed warrior carries her mother’s sword on a mission of vengeance. Having been left for dead after bandits slaughtered everyone at her wedding, she now travels the land hunting those who wronged her.
Bryn Mawr – Barbarian
Bryn Mawr is her own totem animal, and would happily fight fully naked were it not for the protestations of the party. As a compromise, she wears pants sewn from the clothes of her fallen foes (plus some cute ones she liked).
Berwyn Ashland – Cleric
Slow to anger but quick to violence, Berwyn hopes to one day reclaim their stolen homeland (though the orcs living there claim dwarves stole it first). In their experience, there are few problems that can’t be solved with a hammer.
Clark Hollywood – Bard
There are few people who will ever love anything as much as Clark loves himself. He is the self-proclaimed greatest bard of all time, and plays on a mirrored guitar so he can admire himself while crooning ballads of his exploits.
Damen Montrose – Rogue
You don’t have to be part devil to be devilishly good looking, but it doesn’t hurt. Damen spends as much time admiring himself as he does sword fighting, and is oft heard to remark that his favorite things all involve poking someone.
Winona Ravenswood – Warlock
She met the Raven King while exploring the woods behind her school. He offered her power and fortune but all she wanted was a pet crow (who is named Mr Crow). She bound herself to his will, figuring there are worse things to be bound to than a bird.
Gunnison Talman – Gun Guy
DM: What kind of character do you want?
P: I dunno. A tall guy who shoots stuff.
DM: Anything else?
P: nah
Kedzie Waveland – Monk
He belongs to a strictly non-violent sect of elves, and will always try to find peaceful solutions to conflict. Kedzie is known to spend battles dodging and healing the injured on both sides, much to the annoyance of his party.
Pulaski 33 — Thief
Pulaski 33 was found in an abandoned warehouse surrounded by scrap with no memory or known maker. He hasn't yet mastered the human concept of possession, and is often mistaken for a thief. Really he just wants to learn more about the strange world he woke up in
Byron Hoyne – Sorcerer
The last living relative of some of history’s greatest sorcerers, magic comes to Byron as easily as breathing. Unfortunately, he’s rarely sober enough to make use of it. The dragon he chases is an ether-soaked rag, and his latest conquest a case of wine.
